I’m normally a strictly Babyliss Big Hair Brush / Heated Rollers kinda gal when it comes to heated hair appliances, but have recently fallen in love with the newbie to my collection; the Remington Silk Ultimate Styler.

It has been an absolute age since I used a barrel tong on my hair – I dabbled with the Instyler last year but overall regretted purchasing it (it’s definitely more suited to straight/fine haired ladies).

My hair is naturally thick, curly and has all the volume (frizz) in the world – and I therefore need any appliance I use to sleeken my hair as well as style it. I’m also v. lazy when it comes to styling my hair, and subsequently for an appliance to win me over it’s gotta be fast acting and basically do all the work for me. #nobiggie

I was sent the Remington Silk Ultimate Styler a few weeks ago to review, and have since been trying out the various looks it claims to achieve. It promises four looks from the one 25mm ceramic barrel – which can actually be whittled down to two looks – straight or curly (the curls being subdivided into medium, loose or waves, natch.)

Packaging wise, I love it – very sleek and the accompanying heat protection glove and pouch are extremely convenient. And on a side note, I love that the styler is dark – my other curling tongs started off as white but quickly turned a scorched shade of burnt from all the nonchalant singe catastrophes.

The digital temperature control lock function sets at wherever suits between 120-230°C, where it then heats from zero in thirty seconds. (Handily it also shuts off automatically after sixty minutes).

As a hair straightener/smoothener the styler does the job, but I won’t be shelving my GHDs just yet. Obviously it depends on your own hair’s texture though, if all you need is a quick run through to smoothen your mane you’ll probably love it. Personally I found the split in the barrel wasn’t the easiest to open, (which needs to be used only when straightening your hair). However in saying that, perhaps I just haven’t mastered the nack of it yet.

However as a curling tong, I’m 100% sold. I’ve been using it to create loose, messy waves and it’s LOVE. It’s been taking me ten minutes max to style my hair from roughly blowdried to beach waves. Howiye.

As a curling appliance the styler is incredibly easy to use – the barrel heats super fast, you whack a strand of hair around it, hold for around 10 seconds and boom. Done. Again this will obviously depend on your hair’s natural texture – (mine will take and hold a curl  forever, forever). But in comparison to any other curling tong I’ve used, this is street’s ahead.

There are loads of youtube videos showing y’all how to achieve the various looks (eg: this one!), but as for technique there’s nothing new to this model specifically. It just works! Highly, highly recommend.

  1. Oh those curls are fab! I have a few Remington styling tools and have been thoroughly impressed with them all, most of all the straighener I got for €15 in Aldi. I have the wildest hair and boy does it get it straight!
