When an invite from the always gorgeous L’Occitane tempted me with a tour of the Orbis Flying Hospital, the health nerd in me literally jumped at the chance. And so, along with a mini girl gang of Irish beauty journalists and bloggers, yesterday morning was spent touring the incredible aircraft at Cityjet Hangar, in Dublin Airport.
Orbis is an international charity that fights blindness around the globe, whilst its Flying Hospital brings ophthalmic training to communities in third world countries. It’s the world’s only airborne eye hospital – fitted with a fully accredited surgical suite, as well as treatment areas, state of the art technology and a 46 seat classroom. It empowers healthcare professionals in isolated areas, and restores vision to those who need it most. What’s that saying about teaching a man to fish?!
What the Orbis Flying Hospital does is pretty amazing, and has directly helped more than two million people worldwide receive sight-saving treatment since the millennium. 90% of the world’s visually impaired population inhabit developing countries, yet 80% of all blindness is avoidable. The aircraft is just eye-opening (‘scuse the pun).
L’Occitane‘s involvement is equally inspiring. It’s a sensory brand to the core, with its charitable foundation covering three fields of action worldwide – fighting avoidable blindness, preserving natural heritage and promoting women’s leadership. Last year L’Occitane invested over €2million to fight avoidable blindness, with their current goal being to provide eye care for 10million people by 2020. Amazing.
As for the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, L’Occitane sponsored the construction of a Patient Care and Laser Room on board the aircraft in 2011. This room serves as a treatment area for underprivileged patients during pre-operative and post-operative eye assessments, as well as a training area for local ophthalmologists.
What You Can Do To Get Involved…
Throughout March 2017, L’Occitane are selling a fund-raising Solidarity Soap where 100% of the profits will be donated to NGOs dedicated to fighting preventable blindness around the world. For the price of your morning flat white, you can do your part and purchase a soap for €3.50. Winning! It’s such a genuinely worthy cause, and L’Occitane products are incredible, so ya know, it’s a no brainer.
