You know when you just know you could and should be BFFs with someone… except your paths have yet to collide?
I downloaded “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” on my kindle a few days ago when needing to pass some time at an airport. I love Mindy Kaling. I’ve been obsessed with her since her Kelly Kapoor days in The Office. Knowing Mindy had written some of the funniest episodes of that show (Michael Scott grilling his foot on a George Foreman, anyone?!), I presumed her book could only be totes hilar.
It reads like one long magazine article in your favourite glossy. Meaning – it will never be eligible for the Man Booker Prize, but it’s totally addictive. It’s not so much Mindy Kaling’s autobiography, but moreover her outlook on life in general, with personalised anecdotes scattered throughout.
From the very first page, i couldn’t help but read the words in her distinctive voice (LOVE her voice!). The two interweaving themes of the book are – 1. Mindy’s rise from quiet school child to Emmy-award winning Hollywood writer/producer/actress/comedian, and 2. Her constant weight battle. Her attitude to weightloss and body image is so refreshingly honest and incredibly relatable.
What I didn’t expect from reading this, was how inspired I would feel post-read. I want to be Mindy! Her intelligence shines throughout. I adored her ability to seamlessly and comically knit genuine life lessons with trivial celebrity gossip. Mindy is all about female empowerment, and creating your own luck. Shit happens… Accept it and choose your own path.
I’m already re-reading it!
