So, you’re looking for some gift inspo that’s a little less high street and a little more spesh?! Sames. I’m forever trying to cut down my mass market consumption, and support the independents. (You know the shpiel). And so the following are all handmade in Ireland yet still totes gorge gift ideas for weddings, birthdays, Christmas, for your home, for yourself…
Starting with all the beeeaautiful stuff from Elis Galbraith Designs. Eilis is a Donegal based designer, and creates stunning homeware pieces inspired by country living. Think wall art, cushions, kitchen accessories etc. Thanks to our recent wedding, I was the very lucky recipient of a few bits from her collection and can vouch for their quality. (Think Avoca/Anthropolgie-type beautifulness, except handmade so more fab).
2017 was/is the year of my Lost Forest obsession. It’s just the loveliest concept in the world – Gillian Corcoran (aka Lost Forest) designs bespoke botanical jewellery using handpicked flowers from Irish woodlands . You can also send her dried flowers from a special occasion (your wedding bouquet perhaps!) and she’ll conjure up a lil heirloom. Obsessed.
I also discovered Ciara Nolan Designs this year – a Leitrim born Dublin based graphic designer who handmakes personalised prints that make for the perfect present. I wanted one of these so badly I ordered one from me to me (and subsequently pawned it off as a from Pearl to Mark gift – winning).
If the wall print gift concept is right up your street, but maybe something not quite so personalised, then Rachel Corcoran’s art may be for you. They’re just about as Irish as you can get. Otherwise April and the Bear have gotcha covered – I LOVE their ‘Ah Here/Ah Jaysus’ prints.
If delicate jewellery is more your gift to give, check out Triona O’Donnell’s (of Modafix) necklaces here, with all 32 counties being represented. I wonder has anyone bought a Roscommon one?! Irish counties aside, my favourite piece is the ‘Silver Lining’.
Now tell me this and tell me no more – what is cuter than a toddler in handmade knitwear?! Presenting Crafty Clarence – crocheting mama extraordinaire , who creates the most beautiful hats/scarves/accessories by request. I can’t wait for the temperatures to drop a bit more so I can whip out mine and Little Pearl’s matching wooly hats!
Finally, when in doubt, gift a candle is my motto. You can’t go too far wrong with an ol’ bougie, and Tyrone’s Sass and Boho’s handmade candles are DIVINE. (They also do diffusers if you’re that way inclined). I’ve my eye on their Incense Citrus candle next, but can vouch for the Vetiver and Sweet Tart fragrances as being fab.
What do ya reckon, avoid the mainstream this silly season and support the lesser known?
