Okay so this may be glaringly obvious to some, but I was talking to some Mamas recently who were in the dark about cleansing oils (and baby-friendly baby oils) – and so I thought I’d pay it forward.
Since weaning Pearl I feel like I’m cleaning her face and hands on the hour every hour, and I’m loathe to scrub her lil cheeks with baby wipes – however mild or natural. And so, it occurred to me when cleansing my own face, to try an oil on her skin.
Apres feeding time at the zoo, Pearl’s limbs protest their clean up at ninja speed. Mushed leftovers are hardened into her little handeens, and she gives me two seconds to remove. Which is where coconut oil comes in. I simply massage a teeny dollop wherever needed and voila! The food disintegrates in seconds. With one slick wipe away of a (wet) muslin cloth her skin is back to baby soft, cleansed perfection. It’s honestly so, so effective and leaves a beautiful sheen (and scent) on her peachy skin.
The benefits of coconut oil on your baby’s skin (and yours) are endless – it’s naturally antibacterial, antifungal, moisturising, anti-inflammatory – the list literally goes on and on. It also smells lovely, contains SPF properties (although I definitely wouldn’t depend on coconut oil alone in the sun) and is great for eczema, dandruff, dermatitis, and psoriasis.
Coconut oil is totally safe to use on your baby’s skin – just make sure it’s of good quality (preferably cold pressed). And don’t worry about an oil ‘clogging’ up pores – that myth has long been put right.
I’ve only been using coconut oil as a cleansing oil on my little one, but it also works on nappy rash, croup and cradle cap – making it definitely one for the cupboard.
What are your favourite baby hacks (however obvious!)? I’m all ears! xo
